what is dubstep?

Dubstep is one of the latest of the electronic genres to preach some sort of prominence. It’s primarily distinguishable by a proliferation of sub-bass samples and a slow (half-time 140 bpm, or 70bpm) tempo. Some examples here.
Skrillex has been highly touted (and hated) as a dubstep artist. It seems, however, that he is more likely to be labeled brostep (more aggressive, higher frequencies) than dubstep proper. My personal favorite here.
I like this infographic; it seems to explain things fairly well.
